Announcement of new project , Chase

hubby_b and I decided to take up another project, Chase.
It's a NHK drama about a tax bureau inspector.
The screenwriter is the same person who wrote my favorite drama,
Mother. (Sakamono Yuji)
The drama is staring Eguchi Yosuke, Arata, and Aso Kumiko.
Just like Fumo Chitai, we'll have to look up technical words (senmon yogo)
so we'll have to take our time to release the subs.
It is an interesting drama, so I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Let me tell you the synopsis of the drama briefly.
Haruma (Eguchi) is a tax bureau inspector. One day, his wife goes on a trip and
dies in airplane accident. As he investigates his assigned tax evasion case, he finds out
the evaders (Arata, Aso Yumiko) were orchestrating the airplane accident for evasion purposes.

Nice. Was hoping to see more NHK dramas after watching Hagetaka- damn, that was one good series. Glad to hear that you and hubby_b decided to pick Chase up. Will look forward to it. :)

@jt
Yup. :)

@zooey
I loved Hagetaka, too. I also loved Gaiji Keisatsu. Since NHK doesn't need to worry about sponsors, they make quality dramas.

That's a relief to hear that NHK isn't influenced by ratings and sponsorship. Since I was quite impressed by Hagetaka, I plan on watching Gaiji Keisatsu next. I would have already started on Mother but I'm kinda pressed for time so I guess I'll watch something that's shorter. Anyway, good luck with the new project and keep up the good work. :D

im done with hagetaka and gaiji keisatsu and it was really good. it was subbed by withs2's mister X. im kinda new to jdramas and i find it really good. right now im loaded. i didnt know that you guys subbed fumo chitai which i finished last month. i just wanna say thank you.

by the way, i started episode 1 of Mother last week and it's good.

Yes, since NHK is owned by government, they don't need sponsors, but they still need to worry about ratings, so they use popular actors to boost up ratings. Take Taiga Drama (Like Ryomaden) for example. They always use 'hot' actors to grab attention.
I'm sure you won't be disappointed with Gaiji Keisatsu.
I hope you'll get time to watch Mother soon. :)
I look forward to hearing what you think. :)

@jt
I was interested in subbing Gaiji Keisatsu, but the audio file of the first episode was broken, so Agiesub didn't run it well. But I couldn't give up, so I was searching for better raws, but then Mister X beat me. :P
I'm sure he's interested in subbing Chase too, so if he beats me, I'll give up since he is a good subber.

I'm almost done with translating the first episode of Chase, so it'll be up to the editor, hubby_b to when we can release it.
Just like Hagetaka and Gaiji Keisatsu, the script is well written with surprising twists, the actors did good job, and the music producer did good job.

I'm glad you like Mother. :)

haha.. mister x always take the good dramas. i saw gaiji keisatsu in withs2 website and immediately took it since its mister x subbed it. after that i got addicted to jdramas. i hope you and mister x communicate. i prefer if you sub chase. for some reason, mister x uses words that i havent heard of. but i think mister x is already busy.. he already had two long episode korean dramas. but you never know, mr X is a subbing machine. haha..

i've read it somewhere he mentioned Mother and Fumo Chitai as watchable dramas this year. he never mentioned Chase though.

goodluck subbing the rest of the show.

Chuks said...

@jt

My American friend said the same thing about Mister X's subs.
He must be very educated or a bookworm.
Anyway, I'm flattered to hear that. :)

"Watchable" huh. I say more than watchable. :)

jt said...

even americans had issues with the subs huh. so much more for people using english as their second language. especially in historical dramas, new words just flow where i have to pause the show to find that word in the dictionary. good thing everything is on the internet nowadays.

he's in a different world in dramas. even fumo chitai as watchable. anyway, i want to ask you about fumo chitai. i know that it said that its fictional. was there any historiacal relevance about that drama? about the jet fighter, or car industry, or sarvestan oil thingy? because if everything in fumo chitai was made up, then i guess it is watchable then.

Chuks said...

Well, as I explained on my thread for Fumo Chitai, many characters and companies were based on the actual people are companies, and those events actually happened in real life. But the details, like how those things were orchestrated, they are fabricated.

jt said...

i see.. thanks for the info. even if it is fabricated, i still find it entertaining. one of my fave jdramas. hopefully more good stuff arrives.

even americans had issues with the subs huh. so much more for people using english as their second language. especially in historical dramas, new words just flow where i have to pause the show to find that word in the dictionary. >>> Mr X's all right when it comes to modern dramas, it's the historical ones that are a bit out of whack. The subs feel like something out of Old English text, like faux Medieval English. The choice of words and syntax sometimes do not jive, as if great effort was placed in not making it sound like spoken English. I mean, who uses the word visage instead of face, or the word pate instead of head?

Not picking a fight here, just an observation. I know subbers each have their own style but if the choice of words and the sentence construction defeat the purpose of making the show accessible to people... then there's something wrong in this equation. At the risk of sounding ungrateful-- I know foreign viewers like me are beholden to translators because subbing requires a lot of work and dedication, but I just wish there was a way for the community to give feedback without unduly offending them.

Anyway, sorry for ranting, didn't mean to spam your blog. I really appreciate the effort you and your team have put into bringing us these projects. Your subs are very easy to understand and makes viewing pleasurable. I hope you always remain open to constructive criticism; but I guess with the way things are now, there's no need for you to worry because you're doing more than okay. Superb job, really. Thanks again. :)

@zooey - definetly agree to that. i find mr X's subs as a game for me. like try to learn new words just like the english class in school. the funny thing is, i cant remember those words when it appears on screen again. even The Tudors or Pillars of the Earth did not use magical early english hard to understand that melts my brain and then my head explodes kind of words.

zooey and jt's posts made me think...
Especially zooey's line, "I just wish there was a way for the community to give feedback without unduly offending them."
It's true that subbers tend to be sensitive with this kind of feedback, and I'm no exception.
We're probably hiding behind the shield called "We're not professional," but that only keeps us from growing.
I don't welcome feedback which only criticizes the subs without any legitimate explanation, but I should be open to constructive criticism.
So, I'm thinking to create a post in this site where you can give me feedback on my subs.
By the way, thanks for the vote of confidence, zooey. :)

As for Mister X's subs, I'm no place to say anything about his words choice because I'm not native English speaker, but I see your point.
One thing I can say from Japanese point of view, is that his subs are one of the most accurate subs I ever seen. I've seen many fansub works, and I see mistakes here and there, even Kiku TV subs, but his subs are pretty accurate.
And the dramas he subs, they are not easy to sub.

im not against to mr x's subs. when i find the meaning of a new word that X used i feel that it hits to the point. but there should be accuracy rather than being fancy.

about your subs chuks, i was using gom player before when i watched fumo chitai and later found out that VLC is preferable. now i appreciate the side meanings more. especially in episode 1 of Shinzanmono where you add what level 6 of kendo is and how tough it is. i think it adds deeper understanding to it and i appreciate that.

i know it's not an easy task subbing dramas. even mr x himself or herself(?) said that subbing dramas is tough and he's not recommending people to do it.

Chuks said...

@jt
Does that mean you didn't see any notes when you were watching Fumo Chitai?
I put notes about real life relevance and explanation of jargon here and there.

Does VLC player shows the typesetting properly?

Thanks so much for choosing to sub Chase. I love the cast of Chase and was really hoping someone would pick it up for subbing. Really glad you did :)

I don't really have anything against Mr X's subs when it comes to the jdramas. I've seen Hagetaka and Prisoner without any trouble understanding them. It's the sageuks that I find rather unusual. Have to agree with jt when he/she said that there should be accuracy rather than being fancy.

At this point, I'd like to thank you for being open enough as to consider putting up a post wherein people can give you feedback. More power to you and your team and thanks for releasing episode 2 of Pure so quickly. :)

jt said...

yup! vlc is much better. in gom player, you can still read it only in a split second(like the name, side meanings).. before i tend to just ignore it.

im using vlc now especially with your subs. is it only me that uses gom player? dumb me then. or there is something wrong with my gomplayer setting. i think in any shows with subs, i think vlc is much better. for those people who uses gom player, they should be aware of it.

Chuks said...

@lady-darkness24
You're welcome. :)

@zooey
I understand what you and jt are saying,
and I know you two have nothing against Mister X.
Pure's dialogs are short and easy, so it doesn't give me hard time like Shinzanmono. :)
It might be a good material for Japanese learners.
I used to watch American dramas and wrote down the phrases I could use when I was still in Japan.

@jt
I'm not familiar with gom player, nor vlc.
I use The KM player.
I don't know much about computer, so I'm trying to learn.
I'm glad you can see all the notes and stuff now. :)

i finished episode 3 of Mother. the filipina maid at the hotel left some really bad impression. if anybody were wondering what language she used, it is actually tagalog. i think it is understandble that she is trying to kick that cute kid. anyway, in summary, the maid asked the kid why her mother left her in the hotel. the maid is talking to the kid to get out because aside from cleaning her room, she has a lot to do like laundry and other stuff.

i hope that the viewers wont be able to understand what that filipina maid just said. and i hope they wont be able to identify the maid as filipina. haha..

Chuks said...

@jt
Haha, I had no idea that the maid was Filipino.

Thanks for the quick translation, jt, I've always wondered what that chambermaid was actually saying in that episode. Guess it's no surprise her body language and actions did reflect what she actually said too.
