English subtitles for 2010 winter drama, Nakanai to kimeta hi was left incomplete on D-addict and somebody asked me to finish it.

Upcoming project: Second Virgin

I decided to sub Second Virgin.
My speed of releasing subs won't be as fast as other fansubbers,
but I'll do my best.

I'm not sure why this drama has ten episodes, instead of 6.
I feel 10 is too long. I hope it'll keep the momentum until the end.

Kira Kira Hikaru

If anybody can access to the decent raw of Kira Kira Hikaru
and upload it to D-addict, please let me know.
I'd love to sub the drama sometime. It was my favorite drama back in days.

Upcoming projects

I've decided to sub specials of Kita no kuni kara. The series was originally aired
in 1980 and 1981 and became nationally known.
Even though the original series is not fully subbed yet, you can still enjoy the SPs without watching the original series. I'll try to explain the backgrounds of the characters when I release the subs.
(I'm taking over the original series as well.)

Kita no kuni kara was one of the most popular shows in Japan.
I grew up watching the specials. (I was too small to watch the original series.)

One of the producers is actually my aunt's friend, so once I was an extra in his movie, and met Yoshioka Hidekata, the main character of this series.
Many people might know him from Dr. Koto's clinic. Anyway, this series holds a special place in my heart, so I have decided to get them subbed.

You can find the direct download links for the raw here.

We'll start from '95 Himitsu, since Miyazawa Rie (Twilight Samurai) is just irresistibly cute in the drama. The drama also features my favorite song, "I love you" by Ozaki Yutaka.

I think it's best if you just watch it instead of me explaining the synopsis.
You'll be hooked to the cinematography and the main character's father, Goro's personality.

I'm also thinking about taking up a drama from fall season since yenchen69 of Timelessub kindly agreed to help with editing.

2010 Fall Dramas

I'd love to hear what fall dramas you are looking forward to.
I personally look forward to...
-Urakin Ushizima-kun since Yamada Takayuki is a good actor and the producer is from my favorite drama, Kira Kira Hikaru.
-Kokoro no ito since Matsuyuki Yasuko impressed me in Mother and it's NHK drama.
-Kenji Kijima Heihachiro since Hamada Masatoshi is also funny as an actor.

Here's the list of dramas but they are written in Japanese.

Pure ep05

Subs for ep05 are out. Enjoy. :) D-addict.

Translation notes for this episode.

0:02:33 She doesn't like dogs? [Kirai nano ka? 嫌いなのか?]
Subject, your(Omae no okasan) and object, dogs(inu) are omitted here.
The complete sentence would be "Omae no okasan wa inu kirai nano ka?"
Omae is your, but you shouldn't use it unless you are very close to whoever
you're talking to.
If you want to sound polite, say "Anata no okasan wa inu kirai nano desuka?"
Also, "kirai nano ka" sounds masculine, so if you're a girl, I recommend dropping "ka"
and say "kirai nano?"

0:10:04
If you are her guardian, then see that it happens.
[Anataga kokenin dato ossyarunara, sonohen wa shikkari foro shite itadakanai to.
あなたが後見人だとおっしゃるなら、その辺はしっかりフォローして頂かないと。]
What I want to point out here is the verb, foro(follow) suru.
It is one of Japanese English, and it means "support."

0:12:11 Oh, no. [Acha. あちゃ~。]
You see this expression on manga a lot (or drama based on manga).
I personally don't use this expression, I'd rather use "Shimatta."
But I know some people using it and they are avid manga readers.
There are vocabulary specific to manga world, and in my opinion, this is one of them.
(I read some manga when I was younger, and my favorite was Touch (Adachi Mitsuru).
I'm planning to buy the whole series someday. I also liked Itazurana Kiss, but the
author died in the middle of series, so the story was never finished.
I recommend Monster, if it's available in your country. It's an interesting story.
The anime was aired in Japan before and the raws are available if you search.)

0:12:54 You're something. [Taishita Onna dana. 大した女だな]
In this case, addressing somebody as onna (woman) is rude. Toru used onna to show despise.
The polite way to say woman is josei or onna no hito.
When you apply this to a man, you can say "Taishita otoko dana."
The polite way to say man is dansei or otoko no hito.

0:23:33 Doki doki [ドキドキ]
As the note says, doki is the sound of heart throbbing.
When you want to say "My heart throbs" you can say "Doki doki suru."
Ex.
Whenever I see him, my heart throbs.
[Karewo miruto (shinzo ga) dokidoki suru. 彼を見ると(心臓が)どきどきする。]
('Shinzo' is a heart, but you can omit it.)
I haven't being in love lately.
[Saikin dokidoki shite nai na. 最近ドキドキしてないな。]

0:25:07
You don't need to show her the way. She can walk on her own.
[Kanojo no te wo hiite yaranaku tatte, zibun de aruke masu. 彼女の手を引いてやらなくなって、自分で歩けます。]
I personally like this line, so I picked up.
The direct translation is, "You don't need to pull her arms. She can walk on her own."
Just like a mother holds hand of their child to protect, Takako had been showing Yuka
the way.
I'm a girl, so I would use 'agenaku tatte' (or, 'agenaku temo') instead of 'yaranaku tatte.'
'Yaranaku tatte' sounds more manly, in my opinion.
0:31:41 I could care less if you use your sex appeal to get ahead.
[Omae ga onna wo tsukatte syusse shiyou ga doushi you ga, ore ni wa kankei nai. お前が女を使って出世しようがどうしようが、俺には関係ない。]
The expression, 'Onna wo tsukau' (direct translation is 'use a woman') is used when
a woman use her sex appeal to get what she wants.
Get ahead: syusse wo suru

Tell me if you have any suggestion regarding how I should explain Japanese phrases,
or what you want me to explain.

My recommendations on Japanese movies

I haven't watched many movies, so my list might be not so useful,
but I'd like to hear people's recommendations as well.

Tasogare Seibei
(The Twilight Samurai)(2002)
Cast: Sanada Hiroyuki, Miyazawa Rie
Director: Yamada Yoji
I love this movie so much, I own DVD.
I like Yamada Yoji's films since his film is usually heart-warming,
deep yet funny. His jokes put a big smile on my face.

Mibugishiden (When the Last Sward is Drawn) (2003)
Cast: Nakai Kiichi, Sato Koichi, Natsukawa Yui
Director: Takita Yojiro
Nakai Kiichi's acting is shining. Ito Atsuhi's weeping was totally ruining the movie,
but other than that, this movie is well made.

Tegami (2006)
Cast: Yamada Takayuki, Tamayama Tetsuji, Sawajiri Erika
Director: Shono Jiro
Based on Higashino Keigo's novel
When Yamada Takayuki plays a dark character, he does well.
Just looking at his face makes me sad. lol
I'm a big fan of the novel. I had never cried by reading a novel until I met this one.
As if Higashino Keigo had experienced the life of Tegami, the novel was well written.
I was ready to be disappointed when I watched this film, but I ended up liking
the film version too.
Tamayama Tetsuji did amazing job at the last scene.
Come to think of it, Yamada Takayuki did well on Byakuyako, another Higashino's
novel adoptation, and I liked the drama version better than the original novel.
I want to see Yamada doing drama again.

Bushi no Ichibun (Love and Honor) (2006)
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Dan Rei, Sasano Takashi
Director: Yamada Yoji
I hope I won't offend Kimutaku fans, but I didn't know he can actually act until Karei naru Ichizoku.
If I hadn't watched the drama, I wouldn't have watched this one either.
He did great job on this. Sasano Takashi was also great.
Yamada Yoji's subtle humor shines again in this one.

Craw Zero
(2007)
Cast: Oguri Shun, Yamada Takayuki, Kuroki Meisa
Director: Miike Satoshi
I simply like delinquent kids (Furyo). :p I like 1 better than 2.
Endo Kenichi shines in this one.

Okuribito (Departures) (2008)
Cast: Motoki Masahiro, Yamazaki Tsutomu, Hirosue Ryoko
Director: Takita Yojiro
Yamazaki Tsutomu does well this kind of role. He's believable.
Motoki is as beautiful as usual, and a little odd as usual.

Akai Yaiba
(2009)
Cast: Terao Akira, Takenouchi Yutaka
Director: Mashiko Shoichi
Based on Higashino Keigo's novel
I watched this in airplane, so I got distracted a lot, but it's Higashino Keigo's novel
and Terao Akira's acting. It's worth checking.
If I were Terao Akira, I would have done the same thing.

Pure Ep04

The subs for episode 4 is out. Enjoy! D-addict

Here's some notes for this episode.
0:21:40 I have secrets, too. [Ryo-chan ni datte ienaikoto mo ari masu. 涼ちゃんにだって言えないこともあります]
Literal translation would be "I have things I can't tell even to Ryo."
Sb ni datte= Even to sb
Ex.
[Darenidemo himitsuwa arudesyo. Ryo-chan ni datte. 誰にでも秘密(ひみつ)はあるでしょ、涼ちゃんにだって。] Everybody has secrets, even Ryo.
You can also use "Ni mo" in the same way.
Ryo-chan ni mo ienaikoto mo ari masu.
0:36:08 I just feel that way. [Nanto naku ne 何となくね]
Ex.
Nantonaku doubutsuen ni ikitaku narimashita. 何となく動物園(どうぶつえん)に行きたくなりました。
I feel like going to zoo today.

There weren't much to mention in this episode.

Pure Ep03

The subs for ep03 are out. Enjoy. :)

I picked out some phrases which are easy and commonly used for those who are
interested in learning Japanese.
My explanation is intended for Japanese learners who have basic knowledge of
Japanese.
Please keep in your mind that I will only explain how those phrases are used in daily
conversation, but I won't explain them grammatically, since it is very hard to explain
grammar when the langu
age is your mother tongue.

Time: English Translation [Japanese]

0:02:57.44: Let me go. [Hanase]「離(はな)せ」

As you can see, he is demanding to let him go, so “Hanase.

If you want to ask politely, say “Hanashi te kuda sai「離してください」

0:04:11.66: I was right. [Yappari.]「やっぱり」

You can say Yappari when you want to say “That’s what I thought.” “ I was right.”

“I knew it.”

Following sentence is omitted in this line.

Yappari, soda to omotta.「やっぱり、そうだと思(おも)った」

0:05:36.41: Please calm down. [Reiseini natte kuda sai.]「冷静(れいせい)になってください」

Rieisei(noun) means calm. Natte kuda sai= Please become ---.

You can also say “Ochitsuite kuda sai.「落(お)ち着(つ)いてください」Ochichuku=Cool down.

0:07:02.60: And you got all the blame. [Tonda nureginu deshita ne.]「とんだ濡(ぬ)れ衣(ぎぬ)でしたね」

Nureginu means wet clothes.

To be grammatically right, you have to say “Tonda nureginu wo kisase rare mashita ne.「とんだ濡れ衣を着(き)させられましたね」

Nureginu wo kiseru” is a proverb and it means 'frame somebody '.

For example,

"Watashi wa kare ni nureginu wo kiseta." [I framed him for what I did.]「私(わたし)は彼(かれ)に濡れ衣を着せた」

In the drama, the chief editor didn't exactly frame Sawatari, but he ended up taking

a fall for him, so you can use this expression.

As for Tonda, if you look up a dictionary, you’ll see the definition as “awful.”

But in this case, it’s just how people say it, and doesn’t exactly mean awful, it’s more like emphasizing the sentence. You can say this phrase either with or without it, but it sounds

more natural if you say with Tonda.

0:10:01.07: That's what you always tell me, huh.

Takako used the expression, “Mimi ni tako ga dekiru.” [I get calluses on my ears]「耳(みみ)にタコができる」

Taco means calluses as well as octopus.

The expression means just like when you walk too much, you'll get calluses on your heel, if you hear the same thing too many times, ears will develop calluses.

0:18:49.58: I envy them. [Iina. (=Urayamashii na)]「いいな(うらやましいな)」

Japanese use “envy” more often than English speaker does, but it’s not necessary as strong meaning as English’s “envy.”

For example:

A: “My husband comes home early every day.”

B: “Urayamashii. My husband is always late.”

Whenever I have to translate “Urayamashii” or “Iina,” I have to think twice if I should

translate it as “I envy you” or “I’m jealous.” since those two lines are a little too strong to express B’s feelings. So its’ more like “Good for you.”

Just keep in your mind Japanese use envy or jealous more casual than English speakers.

Announcement of new project , Chase

hubby_b and I decided to take up another project, Chase.
It's a NHK drama about a tax bureau inspector.
The screenwriter is the same person who wrote my favorite drama,
Mother. (Sakamono Yuji)
The drama is staring Eguchi Yosuke, Arata, and Aso Kumiko.
Just like Fumo Chitai, we'll have to look up technical words (senmon yogo)
so we'll have to take our time to release the subs.
It is an interesting drama, so I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Let me tell you the synopsis of the drama briefly.
Haruma (Eguchi) is a tax bureau inspector. One day, his wife goes on a trip and
dies in airplane accident. As he investigates his assigned tax evasion case, he finds out
the evaders (Arata, Aso Yumiko) were orchestrating the airplane accident for evasion purposes.

Phoenix kindly agreed to step up to edit the remaining episodes of Shizanmono
so that chokubi can start editing Pure after he's done with the final episode of Mother.
She has worked with SARS and Haruspex, so I'm grateful that she offered us help. :)

I'm currently working on the final episode of Shinzanmono, and I'll work on the
second episode of Pure after that.

Pure

so I'll be subbing it with help of chokubi and hubby_b.
I'll start translating after wrapping up Mother and Shinzanmono.
I recommend you to start downloading off D-addcit while there are many seeders.

Pure is a love story between a low IQ girl who is gifted in arts, and a journalist who is not
interested in people.
The cast are Wakui Emi (Fumo Chitai), Tsutsumi Shinichi (Galileo movie),
Takahashi Katsunori (Dosokai), Fubuki Jun (Sunao ni Narenakute), and Shinohara Ryoko (Tsukino Koibito).
It was aired on 1996, and the average rating was 23.5%, the highest rating was 25.9%.

My recommendations on Japanese drama Part2

Aishiteiruto Ittekure (1995)
This drama was very popular back in days.
It's a love story between wanna-be-actress and a man with hearing impairment.
You can find DVD rip here.

Hakusen Nagashi (1996)
I watched it again and again when I was teenager.
You can find subbed version here.

Pure (1996)
Wakui Emi is just adorable in this drama.
It's a story about a very talented artist who has low IQ and a journalist who
falls for her.
This drama is deeper than typical love stories.
It shows how society treats this low IQ girl and how her mother tries to protect her
from people who try to exploit her.

Stalker-Nigekirenu Ai (1997)
Watabe Atsuro got a lot of attention because of this drama.
He's so good when he plays a creepy role.

Keizoku (1999)
This is also Watabe Atsuro drama.
If you like Trick or Jiko Keisatsu, you might like this.

Haru Ranman
(2002)
The lead, Oshio Manabu got arrested for drug not long time ago, so
I don't think he'll ever come back as an actor.
It's not that excellent drama or anything, but it's fun and cute.
This drama is for girls, in my opinion.

Some of the dramas I mentioned here are not available for download.
If anybody who is interested in those drama subbed and happened to have
access to the raws (have to have decent quality), contact me.
I'm happy to give it a try to sub.

My recommendations for Japanese drama

I was born and raised in Japan, so I watched my share of Japanese dramas
until I moved to US in my early 20s.

Some of the dramas I recommend are old and not sure they are that good,
but they are good enough to come to my mind.

Kou Kou Kyoshi
(1993)(Not 2003 version)
It's a story about a high school teacher (Sanada Hiroyuki) and his student (Sakurai Sachiko)
fall in love.
The screenwriter, Nojima Shinji is genius on writing dark stories, and since this drama
was probably the first drama ever to cover rape, it caused controversy.
I was only 6th grade when it was aired, so my mother didn't like me watching it, but
I begged her to let me watch.

Okane ga Nai
(1994)
Fun to watch.
Click the title, it will lead you to the Timelessub, where you can download
subbed videos.

Kira Kira Hikaru (1998)
It's a story about a rookie medical examiner (Fukatsu Eri), her colleagues (Suzuki Kyoka,
Kobayashi Satomi) and a detective (Matsuyuki Yasuko). Their conversation is funny
and witty, and I used to adore those independent women.
I heard some group is planning to sub this series, so I hope they'll release the subs soon.

Ikebukuro West Gate Park
(2000)
I had never seen a drama like this at that time, so I remember I was quite shocked
when I watched it.

Gokusen
(2002)
I loved the first season, but not the squeals.

Shiroi Kyoto
(2003)
Based on Yamazaki Toyoko's novel.
Karasawa Toshiaki did a great job.

Nodame Cantabile
(2006)
Almost all my girlfriends were hooked on it.

Jiko Keisatsu
(2006)
Fun to watch.

Kekkon Dekinai Otoko (2006)
Abe Hiroshi and Natsukawa Yui did a perfect job.
Their subtle humor is just perfect.
I can watch it again and again, and still be able to enjoy it.

Hagetaka (2007)
This is a business drama. Well-directed, and well-acted.
The music director also did an amazing job.

Karei Naru Ichizoku
(2007)
Based on Yamazaki Toyoko's novel.
I didn't know Kimura Takuya could actually act until I watched this drama.

Gaiji Keisatsu (2009)
Unlike most of Japanese terrorist-related dramas, this drama tried to be as realistic as
they could.
Read more on withs2.com.

Saru Lock
(2009)
Fun to watch.

Shiroi Haru (2009)
Only Abe Hiroshi can act like that.
If not for Abe Hiroshi and Endo Kenichi, this drama would have failed, but
they turned the ordinary script into something worth watching.

Fumo Chitai (2009, 2010)
Not as great as other Yamazaki Toyoko's dramas (Shiroi Kyoto, Karei naru Ichizoku),
but still the quality is good, and actors are just amazing, especially Karasawa Toshiaki,
Harada Yoshio, and Kishibe Shiro.

Chase (2010)
This drama is written by the same screenwriter of Mother (Sakamoto Yuji).
The story is about a tax fraud investigator of Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau.

Mother (2010)
The best drama I ever watched.
Just amazing.
When I heard about this drama, I didn't feel like watching it, since I thought the drama
was nothing but a dark drama. But I gave it a try since I like the lead actress, Matsuyuki
Yasuko. I was hooked on this drama right away.
Beautiful cinematography, talented actresses, great directing, and well-written script will
blow you away.

You should be able to find easily the raws for most of the dramas I listed.
If you need a help to find them, contact me.
I subbed Okanega Nai, Saru Lock, Fumo Chitai and Mother.
(No one have subbed Kira Kira Hikaru and Chase yet.)

Projects I'm interested in

29-sai no Christmas (1994)
For synopsis and casts, check here.
I was 14 when I watched this drama, and I loved it.
I haven't been able to find decent quality raws, and the chances I ever find them
are pretty dim.

Furikaereba Yatsugairu (1993)
Do not look up Dramawiki or JDroma.com for synopsis, since they pretty much say
how it ends.
I'm not good at writing synopsis, but the story is about two doctors, one is very
sincere and popular with patients(played by Ishiguro Ken) and the other one
is very talented but arrogant and cold-hearted.(played by Oda Yuji).
I have access to the raws, but I haven't had a chance to download them all yet.

Upcoming season
I haven't found any interesting dramas to sub for upcoming season (2010 summer) yet.
I like the screenwriter of GOLD (Nojima Shinji) and the author of the novel for Mioka
(Ishida Ira), but last time I chose a project based on screenwriter, I failed.
So I have to watch the drama before I take up any project.

Mother (2010 Spring)

Synopsis
Suzuhara Nao (Matsuyuki Yasuko) is a substitute teacher
at an elementary school.
She meets 7-years-old girl, Michiki Rena (Ashida Mana), who is
abused by her mother and her mother’s boyfriend.
Seeing Rena’s misery, Nao impulsively takes Rena into her own
custody in the attempt to save her.

Regardless the dark story, directors manage to create sophisticated
drama with artistic cinemagraphy.
Matusyuki Yasuko is doing a great job as usual,
and Ashida Mana, who plays 7-years-old elementary school girl,
is doing an amazing job. I can't believe she is only five in real life.
