Shoot, I still have a bunch of dramas I need to finish and here I am starting on this one already. Chalk it up to ADHD. Anyway, thanks for sharing this wonderful series.

Just saw the first episode and I have to say that I like how the show is very particular in distinguishing tax avoidance from tax evasion. I'm pretty intrigued with The Magician... his style and appearance kinda reminds me of the Thin Man in "Charlie's Angels" minus the heavy panting and screeching. LOL x)

Just a minor observation though, I hope you don't mind-- I'm quite sure that the countries identified in this episode are referred to as "tax havens" not "tax heaven".

@zooey,

I'm glad you liked it. :)
hubby_b and I learned a lot about tax evasion while subbing this. Maybe we can utilize it next year. :P
The scenes between Murakumo and Kaori are a little
too soap opera-sh, but other than that I think this is an excellent drama.
ARATA does kinda look like Thin Man, huh. lol
I wasn't familiar with this actor, but he was
apparently top model before. Kudos to NHK for
choosing him. He's a perfect fit.

About tax havens, you're right.
I naturally assumed heaven since 'no tax'=heaven,
you know. :p
I'll make a note on the subtitle thread.
Thank you for pointing out. :)

Been thinking where I've seen ARATA before and then it hit me-- he's the guy who played Smile in "Ping Pong" and that movie's like one of my all-time favorites. Duh. Didn't recognize him without the hair and glasses. Has it been 8 years already? LOL x)

RE Murakamo and Kaori, well that part at the beach with the waves crashing really is the stuff of soaps. I may be jumping the gun here but I get the feeling that Murakamo's relationship with Kaori will be the end of him. Guess, I'll have to wait and see. Oh, and good luck with the tax evasion schemes... will keep my fingers crossed for you next year. ^^

@zooey,

I didn't know the movie, Ping Pong, so I watched
trailer. ARATA totally looks different from Murakumo. lol Kubozuka X Kudokan, huh. I should
check it out.

I think Aso's acting is making it look like soap opera, but I like her anyway. She reminds me of my cousin.
>Murakamo's relationship with Kaori will be the end of him.
You'll see. :P
>Oh, and good luck with the tax evasion schemes... will keep my fingers crossed for you next year. ^^
I'll let you know. :)

You're welcome. Enjoy. :)

done with episode 1. really good. what a way to start the episode, the main actor almost dipped his face in the toilet bowl.

kinda reminds me of Hagetaka(because of money stuff), Prisoner(Mr Wong's english), Gaiji keisatsu(because of investigation thingy).

at first it gave me a headache because the numbers are killing me. but it really is educational. by the way, the magician guy reminds of TRICK. what about his prostetics? is it really necessary to sleep with someone still using prostetics? now im mystefied by it. haha..

zooey said...

@ Chuks - Ooh, you should really check out "Ping Pong". It's pretty good. Can't go wrong with that Kubozuka and Kudo Kankuro combination. And since you directed me to the fact that ARATA used to play Smile in the said movie, I'm now compelled to watch "Air Doll" and "Snakes and Earrings". Have to admit that this guy's doing one heck of a job playing villain in this drama.

@ jt - Re Murukamo's prosthetic arm... maybe they were too caught up in the throes of passion that it never occurred to them to yank the thing off or maybe he just needed it to maintain his balance. LOL x)

Chuks said...

@jt,

>the main actor almost dipped his face in the toilet bowl.
That was great opening. I'm sure that scene interested many viewers.

I don't know Prisoner, but Hagetaka and Gaiji Keisatsu are one of my favorites.
The music resembled to Hagetaka. Detail oriented part resembled to Gaiji.

>at first it gave me a headache because the numbers are killing me.
Haha, tell me about it. :p

>is it really necessary to sleep with someone still using prostetics? now im mystefied by it. haha..
I go with zooey on that one. :)

Chuks said...

@zooey,

I looked up the movies you said.
To be honest, Air Doll didn't interest me since I have hard time getting into fantasy, but my first impression on movie is usually not reliable, since I didn't feel like watching Bruno, but I ended up liking it. :p
On the other hand, Snakes and Earrings sounded
interesting, but I can't even look at blood, so not sure if I can stand watching them piecing...

i think the prostetic is made up of either gold or bundles of money hidden in it.

well, im a sucker when it comes to math, numbers, etc.. i spend summer class when i was in high school for failing math. i think this show has been pause/played a lot that it broke my pause/play record. i guess if this is not subbed, i might be ignoring the words just like watching USTV.

just want to ask, if by any chance there are some truths about it? is it based on recent events in japan?

frankly, it's not. But if you want to watch it anyway I can assure you that there's not much blood in it. A lot of sex but not much blood.

>>kinda reminds me of Hagetaka(because of money stuff), Prisoner(Mr >>Wong's english), Gaiji keisatsu(because of investigation thingy). reminded me mostly of marusa no onna, Juzo Itami's movie. Eguchi Yosuke's acting has improved a lot, and his appearance too. He's only getting better and better.

I was surprised that the movie was even mentioned in ep1. As if to act as a humorous disclaimer that "they're different from that movie". And having seen both of them, I'll agree and say that they're great in their individual ways.

But really, the scene in ep1 where they searched that fella's mansion is definitely paying hommage to the movie.

I expected as much. Goes only to show that just because the source material won the Akutagawa Prize, doesn't mean it'll make for a good movie. Actually saw the book but hesitated to read it. Frankly, I'm surprised that it even won an award considering that its plot involves a wayward teen and a quest for a forked tongue. Must be something in the way it was written or else the judges have a soft spot for stories about pain and alienation. Anyway, thanks for the heads-up, panda_zedo.

I don't think so.

@panda-zedo
>reminded me mostly of marusa no onna, Juzo Itami's movie.
A lot of people pointed out when the first episode was aired, but you'll probably change your mind after next episode.

>Eguchi Yosuke's acting has improved a lot, and his appearance too
Yeah, I agree.

I felt that way too.

Yeah. I enjoyed subbing that scene.

@zooey,
I still think I'll give it a try on that movie.
I personally don't know much of the director, Ninagawa Yukio's films since he's more specialized in play, and he got so much reputation in that area.
I like Yoshioka when she plays a sad child.
I read about the prize when I was looking up on this film, and it said actually the judges couldn't find any movies they wanted to award, but they had to choose, so they went with this one.

...Or they had snake for diner before deliberation...
"remember those snake skewers at the restaurant?
- yeah, that was delicious!!!
-ok, let's give this book the prize!!!
:o)))

oooohhhhh!!! the agony of watching yuriko yoshitaka in that movie!

LMAO. Bloody good one, panda_zedo. Those skewered snakes really capture the title of the book. Talk about a 1-2 combo. Snakes and piercings. Ahahaha

@ Chuks - Will see the movie, too, even though the book came out with mixed reviews. Who cares if ARATA and Kora Kengo look like a bunch of freaks? Who cares if I can no longer watch Mioka after seeing Yoshitaka Yuriko play a wildchild who'd give out sexual favors just to get a tattoo? Yeah, bring on the freaky! LOL :)

Chuks said...

@zooey,
Haha, you actually made the movie sound more interesting. lol
I watched "When the Last Sword is Drawn" last night.
It was so good that my towel got soaking wet.
Have you ever watched it? I recommend it.
I'm not a big fan of samurai movie, so when my friend asked me to watch it together, I was like "Nah" But once it started I got really into it.
I just downloaded "Crows Zero 2" and "Tokyo tower Okan to Boku" movie version, so I'll watch them soon.

Akiramike said...

Thanks for subbing Chase! If you're after samurai movies is the no.1 must watch for me is Twilight Samurai.

Chuks said...

@Akiramike
Actually, the movie was so good that I own the DVD. :)
I don't own many DVDs. I have Godfather, Planet Earth, Twilight Samurai, Band of Brothers, and Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
I want to get the Gladiator sometime.
Thank you for the recommendation anyway. :)

zooey said...

Twilight Samurai is indeed good. Haven't seen or heard of "When the Last Sword is Drawn" so I thank you for the recommendation, Chuks. :) As for "Tokyo Tower Okan to Boku", I'll probably catch that this week over at the university film theater where they're having a rerun of the films screened for Eiga Sai 2010. Admission is free. Hehe.

P.S. Sorry to spam your blog again but just saw "Snakes and Earrings"-- it wasn't bad, wasn't good. Just a whole lot of blah. Not at all kinky like I expected, I think Yoshitaka Yuriko might have been a miscast. Now I'm off to watch episode 4 of Pure. I'm too lazy to post another comment on the other entry, so allow me to express my gratitude here. Thanks, Chuks! :)

Chuks said...

@zooey,

That's cool that you can watch it on big screen. :)
Don't worry, you're not spamming. I like to read
your comments.
So the movie was so-so, huh. Why you think she was
miscast? She didn't do good job?
How about Arata? Was he good?

jt said...

@zooey

i wasnt paying attention to what you said about the free movie until i saw the posters in your blog. now, i envy you!!! why is it in davao, sharingla, or UP? why not in my hometown??!! so unfair. i could've got out from my dungeon.

zooey said...

@ jt - Man, you live in dungeon? LMAO. Too bad they're not screening the movies in a place near you. Sorry about that.

@ Chuks - I don't know, there was something off about it. The character was supposed to be about this aimless person and frankly, 2 hours went by, I finished the movie and I couldn't care less about these folks. I think the two boys did better in this film, they got the look and the characters down pat. Yuriko on the other hand... just didn't have the range or the experience(?) to convey what's expected of the part. She just felt and looked static for the most part.

jt said...

@zooey

yup! a dungeon. lots of creepy crawlies and dirt. i forgot to mention that its dark. hikikomori fits the description. my life can be fully based to a lifestyle from the anime "welcome to the NHk" or Moteki minus the chicks.

Chuks said...

@zooey,
I see. I think you're right about Yuriko not being matured as an actress. She does look static in any dramas I've seen so far. That's why I thought she would be a fit when she plays aimless person.
Have you watched Tokyotower, Okan to Boku yet?
I watched both SP and movie, but I'll wait to say anything about it until you watch.

@jt
Get out of the dungeon!
